Mandan Girls pick up huge win in conference and pull into a tie for the final playoff spot at this time with Williston after the Braves 2-1 win over Devils Lake
The Mandan Braves needed to win this game tonight if it wanted to stay in the hunt for a chance to compete for a state tournament berth. Before tonights game, the Braves trailed the Coyotes by 2-points and are behind a game with the head-to-head as Williston beat Mandan 6-3 in their first of two meetings this year. With the Braves win tonight, they are now tied with Williston in the standings with 8-points but Williston has the current tie breaker with the win earlier in the year. Mandan and Williston will meet one more time this season plus each has a few more conference games to play so it should be interesting down the stretch. Devils Lake needed this win to stay in the playoff picture as the Firebirds drop 6-points behind both Williston and Mandan for the 8th spot. Devils Lake still has games to play and are not totally eliminated but this loss it certainly makes it more of an uphill battle but one never knows in sports what will happen.
Fargo South Girls keep rolling as they improve to [17-0] on the year with their 11-1 win over Williston in North Dakota Girls Conference play. The Bruins are getting closer to locking the conference title as well as the #1 Seed for the Girls State Tournament which will take place in four weeks. Williston had a chance to get some points and stay ahead of Mandan in the standings, but now will remain tied with the Braves for 8th Place.
Minot Girls pick up 24th conference point and move into a tie with Fargo North for the moment after the Magicians pick up a 4-0 road win at Jamestown. Depending on the Fargo North at Bismarck game tonight, the two teams are tied with 24-points but North has played 3 less games than Minot. Jamestown with the loss remains 5-points behind 6th Place Grand Forks and maintains their 3-point cushion over Williston and Mandan who are in 8th Place.
Bismarck Century does its job tonight claiming an 8-0 home win over Williston to remain unbeaten in the conference which now will set up the two unbeaten teams in the region as Bottineau/Rugby will travel to Bismarck to play the Patriots at the VFW Sports Center at 7:15 pm Saturday Night.
Hazen/Beulah Boys travel to former North Dakota East Region Conference member Wahpeton/Breckenridge for a non-conference game against the Blades tonight but come up short 4-3.
Fargo North Girls pick up an important win at Bismarck as they now stay ahead of 3rd Place Minot by 2-points and are tied with Fargo South in points but have two losses compared to South's zero losses. Bismarck now is losing ground for a top three spot, and has West Fargo breathing down their necks. The Girls races are getting good with three weeks of conference play left.

The 2011-12 Girls Coaches Poll is now uploaded and Fargo South was the near unanimous choice to win it all this season.
I apologize for the delay in this poll but finally received the last ballot today so have now uploaded the Girls 2011-12 Coaches Poll voted on by the 11-Head Coaches in the state. Fargo South has been tabbed the favorite to win the 2011-12 State Championship as the Bruins received 9 of the 11 first place votes. The Bruins finished last season with an overall record of [20-5-0] and a conference mark of [16-3-0]. They finished 3rd in the state tournament last year with a 3-2 overtime win over Grand Forks. Grand Forks, who finished 4th in the state tournament last year, is picked to finish as the second place team this year. The Knightriders finished at [15-9-2] overall and [13-4-2] in the conference last year. West Fargo and Fargo North who played in last years state championship game round out the top four teams picked for this years poll. A complete list of all eleven teams can be located by clicking on the "Coaches Poll" Tab at the top of the site.
East Region Head Coaches pick G.F. Red River to win the East
The East Region Coaches have tabbed G.F. Red River to win the East Region this year as they received 7 of 8 first place votes. Since teams cannot vote for themselves, the Roughriders garnished all votes from the remaining East Region Head Coaches. The defending East Region Champions as well as last years State Champions finished the 2010-11 season with an overall record of [21-6-0] and a region mark of [10-4-0]. The Grafton/Park River Spoilers were picked second and did gain one first place vote. The Spoilers who were the state runner-up team to the Riders will again be trying to knock off G.F. Red River this season. The Spoilers finished last year with a [15-11-1] overall record and a region record of [8-5-1]. Grand Forks Central came in as the third team in the poll with Fargo North rounding out the top four. The complete East Region Coaches Poll and points as well as last years records can be located under the Coaches Poll Tab on this site.

The West Region Coaches Poll is now finalized and located in the Coaches Poll Tab. The West Region Head Coaches vote on this poll and this year the nine coaches have tabbed Bismarck Century as the favorite to win the West Region for the second year. Last year the Patriots went a perfect [15-0-0] in the region and also won the West Region Tournament with a victory over Minot High in the championship game. Bottineau/Rugby has been selected second as the Braves missed out on the state tournament last year after going [16-8-0]-overall on the year and [11-4-0] in the Region. NDHSAA Board of Directors passes Shootouts for Boys and Girls High School Hockey Games beginning this fall for the 2011-12 season.
The 2011-12 High School Hockey Season will have a new twist this fall as the NDHSAA Board passed at their annual meeting this week Shootouts for all North Dakota Boys and Girls High School Hockey Games. Here is the written regulations and policies as sent to me from Mr. Matt Fetsch of the NDHSAA who oversees high school hockey for the state.
*********************************************************************************************
During regular-season games, if the game remains tied at the end of the eight (8) minute overtime period, the teams will proceed to a shootout. The rules governing the shootout shall be the same as those listed under Rule 4, Section 7 - Penalty Shot.
The teams will not change ends for the shootout. The home team shall have the choice of shooting first or second. The teams shall alternate shots.
Three (3) players from each team shall participate in the shootout and they shall proceed in such order as the Head Coach selects. All players are eligible to participate in the shootout unless they are serving a ten-minute misconduct or have been assessed a game misconduct or game disqualification.
Once the shootout begins, the goalkeeper cannot be replaced unless he/she is injured. No warm up shall be permitted for a substitute goalkeeper.
Each team will be given three shots, unless the outcome is determined earlier in the shootout. After each team has taken three shots, if the score remains tied, the shootout will proceed to a "sudden death" format. No player may shoot twice until everyone who is eligible has shot. If, however, one team has fewer players eligible for the shootout than its opponent, both teams may select from among the players who have already shot. This procedure would continue until the team with fewer players has again used all eligible shooters.
Regardless of the number of goals scored during the shootout portion of overtime, the final score recorded for the game will give the winning team one more goal than its opponent, based on the score at the end of overtime.
The losing goalkeeper will not be charged with the extra goal against. The player scoring the game-winning goal in the shootout will not be credited with a goal scored in his/her personal statistics.
If a team declines to participate in the shootout procedure, the game will be declared as a shootout loss for that team. If a team declines to take a shot it will be declared as "no goal"
